The pier at Balboa has long been a popular place to stroll and fish. It was erected soon after the original pier, built in 1905, was destroyed by a violent storm in 1939. California Historical Landmark #775, the First-Water-to-Water-Flight Site, is located at the foot of Balboa Pier. Commemorated here is Glenn C. Martin's history-making flight from Newport Bay to Catalina Island on May 10, 1912. OCTD #53 and #65.
